Crisp walks & coat care: Helping your dog thrive this Autumn

Autumn has a way of sneaking in quietly. One day it’s long, warm evenings, and the next you’re crunching through golden leaves under soft grey skies. For many of us, these crisp walks are a highlight of the year. For our dogs though, the cooler weather and shifting conditions can bring both comfort and a few challenges.

This season is the perfect time to think about soothing paws, protecting coats, and feeding in a way that keeps them cosy from nose to tail.

Protecting paws on Autumn walks

Falling temperatures can make walks refreshing, but wet paths, mud, and occasional frost can be tough on paws. After a long stroll, it helps to gently rinse or wipe paws to remove grit, leaf mould, and salt from treated paths. This not only keeps pads clean but reduces irritation and dryness.

For dogs prone to cracked paws, a balm or paw butter can act as a barrier. Think of it as slipping into a pair of sturdy boots before stepping outside. A little routine after each walk goes a long way.

Guarding the coat against seasonal wear

Autumn coats aren’t just about fashion. Brushing becomes especially important at this time of year, as dogs shed their lighter summer coat and prepare for the colder months. Regular grooming helps to untangle knots, remove loose fur, and keep the skin underneath healthy.

Some coats also need a bit of extra defence against damp weather. A lightweight, waterproof jacket can help short-haired or elderly dogs stay comfortable on long rambles. And for those with thicker coats, a thorough dry-down after rain keeps their skin from staying damp too long.

Feeding for cosy domfort

Nutrition is at the heart of coat care, more than many realise. Foods rich in omega fatty acids found in our all our wet food products but especially our fish ones, for instance, support shiny coats and supple skin, which can make a noticeable difference as the weather dries out. If your dog spends more time outdoors and burns extra energy on walks, adjusting their food slightly can help maintain a healthy balance.

Autumn also feels like a season of comfort, and our dogs sense that too. Warm meals, gentle digestion, and wholesome ingredients make feeding time another form of care. It’s not indulgence, it’s simply keeping them well through the seasonal shift.

Making the most of Autumn days

Autumn walks bring their own kind of magic. The crunch of leaves, the smell of woodsmoke in the air, the soft light on early evenings. With a little extra care for paws, coats, and nutrition, dogs can enjoy this season as much as we do.

In truth, it’s often the simple rituals that matter most. A quick paw check, a brush after a muddy walk, or an extra spoonful of nourishing food in the bowl. These quiet acts of care keep our companions comfortable, healthy, and ready to share the beauty of autumn with us.
