How to Train your Canine Companion in 30 Days

Training your dog can be a fulfilling and enjoyable experience for both you and your furry friend. It's important to remember that consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement are key. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you train your dog in 30 days. We can't guarantee that this 100% foolproof but we do know that at the end of these 30 days you will know your canine companion much better and they will have the measure of you!

week one - establishing a routine

Days 1-3: Building Trust

  • Spend time bonding with your dog.
  • Use gentle petting and calm voice tones to build a rapport.

Days 4-7: Basic Commands

week two - reinforcing old commands and introducing new ones

Days 8-10: Being Consistent with Basic Commands

  • Practice, practice, practice the basic commands many times a day.
  • Keep training sessions short but frequent.

Days 11-14: Introducing "Lie Down" and "Leave It"

  • Add commands more complicated commands like "Lie Down" and "Leave It."
  • Reward successful attempts with lots of praise and treats.

week 3 - lead training and behavioural issues

Days 15-17: Lead Training

  • Introduce your canine companion to their lead and collar.
  • Start with short walks, rewarding calm behaviour. If your dog starts to pull, stop walking, wait a few seconds and then continue.

Days 18-21: Addressing Jumping and Barking

  • Teach your dog not to jump up with a firm 'No!' and then by turning away and ignoring them.
  • Reduce excessive barking by teaching the "Quiet" command.

week 4 - advanced training and socialisation
Days 22-24: Advanced Commands

  • Time to teach more complex commands like "Roll Over".
  • Remember to continue to use positive reinforcement.

Days 25-28: Socialisation

  • Introduce your dog to new environments eg town centres, parks and playgrounds
  • Allow them to interact with other dogs and people in controlled environments.

Days 29-30: Review and Consistency

  • Review all the the commands you have taught and the progress you both have made.
  • Moving forwards, ensure consistency in your commands and rewards.

Tips for Success:
1. Patience is a Virtue: Training takes time, so be patient with your pupster.
2. Positive Vibes Only: Always use positive reinforcement. No harsh words or actions.
3. Bite-Sized Fun: Keep sessions short and fun. Dogs have short attention spans.
4. Stay Consistent: Be consistent with your commands and rewards.
5. Health is Wealth: Ensure your dog is healthy. A healthy dog makes training smoother.

Remember, the goal of training is not only to teach obedience but to strengthen the bond between you and your canine companion. Enjoy the process, and happy training!
